I’m Shaun Ashford, a 28-year-old photographer, photojournalist, law student and urban explorer living in Cardiff, South Wales.

I’ve always been a keen photographer, even at a young age I used to love using my parent’s video camera while I was on holiday, I never thought that such a simple thing would grow into such an important feature within my life today.

Since 2009, a lot of my life revolved around “urban exploring”, a taboo hobby that involves entering abandoned and disused buildings or spaces generally without permission in order to “explore” and photograph them.

In 2016, things changed. I suffered from a mental health breakdown, one that I’m not afraid or embarrassed to speak about. The health professionals caring for me demanded that I stopped my urban exploring because it wasn’t safe for somebody like me. For a little while I listened and I found myself becoming worse. I decided to complete a UK tour, photographing over 100 abandoned buildings in just over a week and I came out the other side stronger than ever before.

Photography for me is more than a hobby or a job, it’s a way of life. It’s my safe place. It’s me.

I’ve started this website to give people a small insight into my world. The world that many think is crazy, one that revolves around derelict buildings, street photography, editorial photography and of course, portrait photography. I’ll soon be uploading fortnightly blogs providing support on mental health, domestic abuse, family law and photography but in the mean time, if there’s anything you want to know, feel free to drop me an email at any time!

Thank you very much for taking a look at my website. Shaun.
